MOL and K Line had been working together on Taiwan since 1980, and in 1983 MOL requested permission from the Japanese Ministry of Transportation to withdraw from service with the five others on the American west coast. P&O Containers Limited (P&OCL), the new name following P&O's full takeover of OCL, had taken a 50% stake in TFL in 1986 to take over completely in 1987, replacing the TFL name with P&O in 1990.
